The holiday deck I created for Deathwish has been released! It was a small run, so whatever is left in the stores is it! Below is a pic of the infamous Antwuan Dixon who's depicted as Crip Cringal on the deck. He only signed 50, so if you're lucky enough to have one they're extremely limited edition. More pics here.

Since Deathwish posted the new Black Friday 2009 Release I can finally share the work I've been doing for them. This project started out as a single deck for Lizard King. After a few sketches the guys at Deathwish decided to have me create a whole series. In the span of two weeks I cranked these suckers out! I want to thank DJ, Erik, Alfred, Matt and Justin for their help making it happen so quickly with zero drama. More decks by me for Deathwish are on the way...

"In the last little while, there has been a MAJOR backslide in the industry. Poor rates have been an issue for a while but things are becoming worse. Clients' fees are getting even lower and the rights they're demanding are even higher.

You want examples? How about SWATCH calling me and asking me to design a watch. They wanted a complete transfer of copyright for a paltry fee. As if that's going to happen. Google calls me and wants my work for their new search engine all over the web, the fee? Nothing. Editorial clients are slashing 1999's fees almost in half and citing the bad economy as an excuse. You know what? My excuse is that the economy is bad so you have to pay me MORE for an illustration. How's that for an economic stimulus package?

So here's to every client with shitty fees and terms. Do not waste my time or contact me. I am very busy working with clients who respect artists and you're wasting my time with your solicitations. So for you, I give you a special salute that I hope will keep you away because I don't need your work."

Comic Con San Diego 2008

I had a good time at the Con. My friend and bad-ass designer Mike Essl was on a panel with Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons and designer extraordinaire Chip Kidd. They're working together on an amazing book called Watching the Watchmen, that features TONS of unseen art from the original Watchmen series.

My favorite part of the Con was the Battlestar Galactica Panel moderated by director Kevin Smith. Let's just say that it wasn't rated G. Also, how can you not enjoy Katee Sackhoff in a semi-revealing top?

Zero Dollar Bill

Inspired by high oil prices and a devalued dollar, I set out to make the zero dollar bill! Did you know the U.S. dollar is fiat currency? Or that the Federal Reserve is a private bank, whose board members and meetings are secret? That's right, our economy is controlled by a secret cabal of domestic and foreign banks! No doubt they are looking out for our best interests though...

I e-mailed this piece off to Matt French, who I collaborated on a skateboard deck with not too long ago. He forwarded it to Chicken, the head honcho at Pocket Pistols Skates. Long story short, he asked for a black and white version to make into stickers that will be packaged along with the next wave of Pocket Pistols decks. Some of the detail had to be toned down in order to print correctly at standard U.S. currency size.

I will have limited edition prints and stickers for sale via my site soon.

Yes, I drew everything but the typography. No scanning or Photoshop tricks... just many hours of work!

I spent some time last weekend drawing John K's George Liquor character. First I went through some of my Spumco comics and copied some drawings by John and Jim Smith so I could learn how he is constructed. Eventually I went on my own and started drawing him from my head. Some are okay and some suck, but it was fun to try and draw a character I've never attempted before.

Prince thought he was too cool to allow photographers to shoot the first three songs from the photo pit. So after I shot Portishead (who were amazing BTW) I made my way through the crowd until I could go no further. Prince was amazing of course, but I'm still pissed I had wade my way through all the people and then block their view so I could get my shots. Fuck you Prince, you didn't stop me from stealing your soul with my digital image capture device!

Another Rock N' Roll Travesty

Yet another reason to declare the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame a crock of shit. Madonna was inducted. Seriously, there is nothing rock n' roll about Madonna! Influential pop singer... sure, I'll give her that. At least it made for some interesting pictures. Below is Iggy Pop, who with his band The Stooges performed Madonna's song Ray of Light for the ceremony. Madonna looks like she had some cheek implants, which did nothing to distract me from her turkey neck and granny hands. Iggy is in his usual rock n' roll caveman mode.

After a month and a half of doing non-stop branding and graphic design my drawing skills are weak as hell. I really noticed it when Baloney Boy and I dropped in on a life drawing session last Saturday. My drawings were garbage! I'm not going to embarrass myself by posting them here. It was a good wake up call and I decided to purchase a new large hardcover sketchbook. As much as I love the clipboard for easy scanning, the small size was getting to me. Below are pictures of the first four pages that I drew today. I'm going to try and post new sketchbook drawings a couple times a week. Enjoy!

Last Thursday night at Beauty Bar in San Diego I was introduced by my pals The Vacation to Brooklyn based rockers The Giraffes. Their music is a twisted blend of metal, surf-rock and soulful crooning. They're playing The Knitting Factory in Hollywood tonight and will undoubtedly deliver the goods. They're halfway through their nation-wide tour. If you're not in LA tonight check out their MySpace page to see when they're coming to violate your town. Ghost Ride The Whip!

I was recently asked to contribute to the You Can't Front On... section of YRB Magazine this month. Past topics I've illustrated include: malt liquor, iron-on letters and Rent-A-Center. This time the topic was a phenomenon that I was unfamiliar with called ghost ride the whip. It basically entails dancing on or around your car and generally acting like a jackass while it coasts down the street.

As you can tell by my lack of updates, I've been working on too many projects at once. Instead of turning down the gig I decided it'd be interesting to collaborate with my pal Ben Tegel. I started off drawing the car, which is based on a vintage Vette. Chevette that is. Then I handed it over to Ben who sent me back these great sketches:

I really love them all and it was tough to pick which one to go with! Ultimately I went with the one immediately above this paragraph. It had a great pose, clear silhouette and the character had the right amount of retardedness for me. Then I printed out the sketch and tweaked Ben's drawing a bit.

After I got it close to what I wanted I scanned in the drawing and dropped it into Illustrator for inking and coloring. Since these pieces don't appear that big in the magazine I decided not to add any real background outside of the curb and fire hydrant.

I wish I had more time to finesse the drawing and colors, but deadlines always seem to come quickly. Overall I'm happy with how it came out though. Stay tuned for more collaborations with Ben on upcoming secret projects.

I also have two pieces in the current issue of YRB Magazine. It's the Art Issue, so it's packed with good stuff. Go buy a copy you cheap bastards!

Yesterday I grabbed my camera and hit up the skate park with skater DJ Chavez, while our ladies were cooking a delicious Christmas feast. The park was officially closed because of the holiday and all, but that didn't stop twenty or so skaters from jumping the fence. Just as Thomas Bonilla and Purple show up, the cops arrive and everyone heads to the street.

I'm very fond of this horned Anti-Claus character. He's known as the Krampus in Germany and Austria. His job is to pay a visit to all the naughty kids and deliver a beat down with some broken tree branches. He might even grab you and throw your naughty ass in his basket if you've been really bad!

I think he should get more attention in America. The Krampus should be at every mall sitting right next to Santa. Parents could use that opportunity to scare their kids straight. Photo by Capeet:

Slash Book Signing at The Whisky

Last night I went to The Whisky A Go Go where Slash was signing copies of his autobiography. It was total mob scene and initially pretty disorganized. Once order was established everyone was able to get their books signed very quickly.

While there I bumped into Mayuko and Tsuzumi of local kick-ass rock band The Binges. They're playing The Viper Room on the 15th, so if you live in the LA area and need your face rocked off don't miss the show!

Marc Canter was also there hanging out with Slash at the booth for a bit. If you're a huge G N' R fan like me, you need to go buy his book Reckless Road. It's filled with pictures, stories and gig flyers, 99% of which have never been published before.

Slash performed later in the night but I missed it! I was sick this past weekend and didn't feel that great, so I cut out early. Big mistake! Luckily Slash fan and fellow rock photographer Wendybird captured some cool pictures.

Rejected YRB Piece

This is an old piece that was rejected at YRB Magazine long ago. The writers idea was basically a take on the 80's Richard Pryor movie Brewster's Millions. I can't find the text that goes with it, but the idea is pretty clear with just the pictures. Overall I think they were worried that it was a bit racially insensitive and the editor killed the whole thing.

Basil Wolverton Show

Yesterday Leah and I travelled with our friends Ben and Laura down to Santa Ana through the post apocalyptic haze to set eyes upon MAD Magazine artist Basil Wolverton's show. I highly recommend this show to all cartoonists, animators, comic book artists and fans of those mediums. If you can't get there, be sure to pick up the The Original Art of Basil Wolverton by Last Gasp.

Check out this case filled with fantastic Wolverton schwagg! I especially love all the trading cards with bizarre and grotesque characters that have common names like 'Ron'.

Black Lips at the Troubadour

Last night I shot the Black Lips for Losanjealous at the Troubadour. It was a great show and the rowdiest I've been to since moving to LA. I couldn't stay up front by the stage for more than two songs before I was being smashed by rabid teen rockers.

Here's some custom type I did for a fashion spread in the latest issue of YRB Magazine. The spread features models as giant creatures terrorizing Los Angeles like King Kong or Godzilla. The type I created is very much inspired by classic monster movie posters.

I was also asked to create some sound effects type. Instantly I thought of Jack Kirby era Marvel comic books. So I poured over what reference I had on hand and come up with what you see below. Check out the magazine to see how it all fits together with the photography.

Burning Brides at the Viper Room

Burning Brides performed a triumphant homecoming show at the Viper Room last night. Who Rides the Tiger and Rolling Blackouts rocked the audience before the Burning Brides took the stage to deliver a glorious sonic pummeling. Members of The Binges were spotted getting their rock on at the front of the stage. Thanks to Losanjealous and our favorite radio station Indie 103.1. Burning Brides are currently on tour with Helmet.

Slow Dancing Downtown

This past weekend Leah and I went to check out David Michalek's 'Slow Dancing' video installation at the Music Center Plaza. Michalek filmed 43 dancers of various styles in high definition at high speed (1000 frames a second). The footage is displayed at 30 frames a second on 4 screens, creating 10 minutes of crisp, slow motion playback. It's amazing to see quick dance moves brought down to a smooth, slow and deliberate movement. There's two days left to check it out. So head downtown and see some cool, free art!

The Donnas at the Viper Room

Last night I shot The Donnas at the Viper Room thanks to my friends at Losanjealous. Opening acts, Girl In A Coma and The Randies fired up the crowd before The Donnas took the stage to deliver a kick-ass performance. The Donnas new album, Bitchin' drops today and is available through iTunes or your favorite music pimp.

Appetite for Destruction Turns 20

Anyone who knows me is aware that I'm a HUGE Guns N' Roses fan. Appetite for Destruction marked a major turning point in my life. That album single handedly drew me into the world of rock n' roll. It inspired me to play guitar and explore classic rock like Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath and AC/DC. Through G N' R I also got into early punk bands like The Stooges, New York Dolls, The Ramones and Dead Boys.

Last night I was lucky enough to attend a 20th anniversary celebration at Key Club in Hollywood. Original G N' R drummer Steven Adler and his band Adler's Appetite were joined on stage by his past band mates Duff McKagan and Izzy Stradlin. Slash was also in attendance though he didn't not join them onstage. I was bummed by that since I've been trying to photograph Slash for a while now without any luck. Overall the vibe was positive and it was great to hear G N' R's best songs performed live again.

I'm still hoping G N' R will reunite at some point. I saw them three times back in the early 90's and they were truly one of the best rock bands I've ever seen. In the meantime I suggest hardcore Guns fans check out a new book called Reckless Road which documents the bands early career. I was able to look at a pre-release copy last night and it's filled with great photos and scans of original flyers from their shows on the Sunset Strip.

The commercial I worked on for John K is finally live! The folks at Cold Hard Flash have an interview with John and some of the animators. They've also posted some of the cool production art. It was a fun project and I got to work with a lot of talented people that I had only known from "The Internets".

More digital painting! This time I did a drawing from the video lesson with Slash included in this months Guitar World Magazine and scanned it into Photoshop. It's not the greatest piece I've done, but it sure was fun and I learned a bit.

Back From the Desert

This weekend Leah and I took a little excursion to the desert to see The Duke Spirit perform at Pappy & Harriet's. Our cabin was located at the edge of Pioneertown, a western movie set built in the late 1940's.

We drove up Friday afternoon and were joined by our friends Erin, Rachel and Amy the following day. After some drunken Scrabble on the porch Rachel prepared us a great meal and then we were off to see the band. The Duke Spirit delivered a spectacular performance! It was rad to see them perform in such weird place with a mix of LA people, bikers and local desert dwellers.

Shit's On Fire Again

Around 1:30 pm yesterday another fire broke out near us, this time east in Griffith Park. It seemed under control by late in the afternoon but after sunset it picked up again. These photos were taken by me around 10 pm from our friends Erin and Rachel's place up the hill from us in Beachwood Canyon. By the time we went home around 11:30 pm no flames were visible from our vantage point. Thanks to the hundreds of firefighters who protect us. Leah and I have a feeling this won't be the last fire we see this year.

Coachella: Closing Post

This festival was a truly magical experience. Thanks to my sister Stephanie and her fabulous friends at Goldenvoice, Jody and Stacy. Pete and Allison, it was awesome spending time with you guys! Leah, thanks for putting up with me taking pics for three songs before running off to shoot the next band.

Day three was filled with tough choices. I really wanted to see Willie Nelson but I chose to shoot and watch some of the newer bands like CSS and Klaxons, both of which were great. Rage was as intense as I remembered. Seeing a giant polo field filled to capacity with people was truly mind blowing.

Day two is slightly hotter, though with a light breeze that feels as refreshing as sticking your head in the oven. Still it's impossible to not be stoked about the experience. So many great bands and artists, it's painful to decide who you're going to see and who you will snub.

No, I Haven't Quit Drawing!

I know it seems like I've forgotten how to hold a pencil because I've been posting so much photo stuff, but let me assure you that more drawings are on the way! Right now I have a bunch of great opportunities for my rock photography and I have to take advantage of them. There's a few personal art projects that I'll be starting once I get back from shooting Coachella this weekend. I'll also be doing a redesign of my portfolio and this blog. The Binges performed another great show last night pulling out all the stops before heading out on tour with Canadian rockers Priestess! Leah and I saw The Binges at King King last night. The band was great and put on a killer show. Mayuko, their guitar player has skills and swagger that make current male rockers seem like panty-waists. Next Monday is the last night of their residency before they hit the road. If you're in the LA area go see 'em!
